There are
Tides
and Flows
in This Body

‘There are Tides and Flows in this Body’ is a multichannel sound installation at the intersection of sound art and sculpture. For this work, Lotte and Gillis drew inspiration from the way ancient Mesoamerican cultures, including the Maya, attributed meaning to the world beneath our feet. In the creation myths of these cultures, the underground is often depicted as a womb: a watery, fertile space where life begins and develops.

From this mythical vision, and their fascination with the brutalist architecture of the urban underground, Lotte and Gillis created four water basins and ten concrete speakers. These elements come together to form an aural landscape that feels both aquatic and subterranean, constructed from recordings of the urban subsoil and supported by a live drip system.

The sound of the drips, which are captured in the basins by hydrophones, generates subtle, floating feedback tones. These tones explore the physical relationship between sound and space, continuously shifting and re-forming.
